CONSERVATION & PRESERVATION

The Ranchi Circle of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under Ministry of Culture is the premier organization for the archaeological researches and protection of the cultural heritage of the nation under jurisdiction of Jharkhand State. The conservation, preservation and maintenance of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance are the prime concern of the ASI, Ranchi Circle. The essential field survey, studies and investigations including detailed documentation, recording, collection of field data, condition mapping, drawings, photographs, identification of items of work required to be executed are conducted before attending conservation and preservation works of monuments/sites . It also includes collection of materials sample which are further be analyzed to find out their mechanical and physical property as well as composition of materials. Thereafter, the appropriate techniques are adopted as per archaeological works code and international norms. The detailed studies of structural components such as substructure and superstructure are also conducted with all cares so that monuments could be made more stable and resisting from further damages in all respect.

The organization has archaeologists, technical wings and conservators for conservation, preservation and maintenance of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance. The conservation and preservation works of following monuments/sites are being carried out by ASI, Ranchi Circle under overall guidance of superior officers and Circle Head.

(I) Benisagar Tank and Remains of Temple & Sculptures at Benisagar, Dist. - West Singhbhum.

Structural conservation works of missing, worn out, damaged and decayed structural members of ancient exposed brick structures including taking out, resetting and renewing the same, pointing and lime concrete works as per existing texture of monuments were taken up.

(II) An Ancient Stone Temple with Shivalingam at Khekparta, Dist. - Lohardaga.

Structural conservation works of missing, worn out, damaged and decayed structural members of ancient exposed stone structures were attended. The required conservation methodology included filling and stitching of cracks, restoration and strengthening of stone masonry, grouting, pointing etc. as per original.

(III) Jami Masjid at Hadaf, Dist. – Sahibganj

Structural conservation works of missing, worn out, damaged and decayed structural members of ancient brick structures were taken up as per existing texture of monuments. The structural conservation operation included taking out the damaged fabric, restoration of the brick work, edging of the plaster, pointing, structural strengthening to the cracks and domical roof at different locations.

(IV) Baradari Building with probable under ground cell at Arzimukhipur, Dist. - Sahebganj.

Conservation and preservation works of missing, worn out, damaged and decayed structural members of ancient brick structures were taken up. The conservation measure involved removal of vegetation growth, filling and stitching of cracks, restoration of arches, detached brick works in many locations and structural strengthening work etc. as per original.

(V) Temples at Haradih, Dist.- Ranchi

Structural conservation works of ancient brick structures exposed by scientific clearance including taking out, resetting and renewing the same, pointing and lime concrete works as per existing texture of monuments were taken up.
